- Stone fruits, scientifically known as drupes, are fruits characterized by a juicy, fleshy exterior surrounding a single, hard, central pit (or “stone”) that encases the seed. Examples include peaches, nectarines, cherries and apricots.
- Peaches: Prunus persica
- Nectarines: Prunus persica var. nucipersica
- Sweet Cherry: Prunus avium
- Savory: Peach Tomatillo Salsa
- Sweet: Peach Cobbler Cinnamon Rolls
The pleasure of eating a juicy local Ontario peach right over the sink is something I wait for every year! When Ontario peaches are in season from July through September, my creativity piques, and I’m looking for new ways to enjoy them.
I think that people always assume that stone fruit is best suited for sweet applications, but they also work so well in salads and in salsas, adding a hint of sweetness to balance the savory.
