Closed Captioning: Looking for a fun way to grow vertically in a space that would otherwise go unused? I got you. I have been growing in these galvanized steel gutters for several years now. Before I get into how to build your own, I want to start by saying that not all corps are suitable for this growing method. Shallow-rooted crops like lettuce, radishes, baby greens and even bush beans do well. To start, you’ll want to identify your east, west and south-facing fence posts (or north facing if you’re in the southern hemisphere). Start by attaching a cedar 2×4 as level as possible to each fence post. This will be the foundation on which the gutter is attached. For added support, attach L brackets directly to the cedar 2×4 every 12 inches or so. Attach the end caps to the gutter using screws and drill some pilot holes on the back plate. Place the gutter onto the L brackets and screw it into the cedar 2×4 through the pre-drilled pilot holes. Don’t forget to drill drainage holes every 6 inches or so. Fill the gutter with good quality potting mix and you’re off to the races. Good luck!
