Seed to Table: Potting Up

Closed Captioning: Your plant babies are growing up so quickly and itโ€™s time to move them into a more comfortable home. The reason why we pot up (or pot on as some say) is to help reduce the chance of root bounding. Potting up also gives our seedlings a fresh dose of growing medium to pull nutrients from. The process is quite simple. If you started seeds in small calpacks, you will want to wait until the seedling has about 2 true leaves. Thatโ€™s a good rule of thumb. Fill a larger container with fresh potting mix about halfway up. Carefully remove the seedling from the cell pack. If you notice that the roots are wound tightly you can carefully tease them apart. Place the seedling into the larger container and backfill with more potting mix, firming down as you go. Note that some seedlings like tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and tomatillos can be buried slightly. This will encourage the seedlings to sprout some more roots which will make for healthier plants. Potting up is also a good time to think about separating plants. Refer to page 279 of my book to read more about thinking seedlings.
